WARM LAKE, Idaho — Ten mushers have registered to compete in the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge’s Warm Lake Stage Race, a 52-mile competition spanning two days that begins Thursday morning.
Eighteen-year-old defending champion Caroline Nevills from Middleton will return to defend her title. She will compete alongside her mother, Elizabeth Nevills, also from Middleton.
The field includes mushers from five states: Montana’s Alexandra Ness and Shelby Wright, Utah’s Ashley Sargent, Kayson Judd, John Kunzler and Rex Mumford, Oregon’s Jane Devlin, and California’s Melissa Turner.
The race begins Thursday at 11 a.m., with teams departing at three-minute intervals. All mushing teams will undergo veterinary checks at 9 a.m.
Race organizers have planned a question-and-answer session at 12:15 p.m. Thursday featuring a musher, race veterinarian and Iditarod pilot. The public is welcome to attend.
Teams are expected to finish between 1:30 and 3 p.m. Thursday for the first leg. The second leg begins Friday at 10 a.m., with arrivals expected between 12:30 and 2 p.m.
An awards ceremony will follow Friday’s conclusion once race officials tally results.
