TONASKET, Wash. — The North Central Washington Special Investigations Unit is investigating a fatal shooting by U.S. Marshalls that occurred Dec. 19 in Okanogan County, about 17 miles northeast of Tonasket.The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man who was killed as Samuel A. Mittler, 40, of Tonasket, following an autopsy.Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Special Operations Group and the Washington State Patrol SWAT team were serving a nationwide arrest warrant early that morning when law enforcement shot Mittler. He was wanted on two counts of second-degree assault and one count of intimidating a public servant.Investigators said Mittler was armed with a shotgun when he made contact with marshals.The scene has been processed, and investigators are analyzing evidence. Detectives have executed multiple search warrants to collect physical evidence and are working with the Washington State Patrol and the U.S. Marshals Service to obtain body-worn camera footage from officers present at the scene.A family liaison has been assigned to keep Mittler’s family informed. The investigation remains ongoing, and updates will be released as information becomes available.
