SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane man has been sentenced to 34 years to life in prison for the sexual abuse of a child.
According to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office, 38-year-old Zachary C. Kelty was sentenced on Tuesday to 408 months to life for 11 counts of sexual abuse of a child.
Court documents and trial testimony showed Kelty raped and molested a child family member for around five years in their shared Spokane home.
The victim was 9 years old when the abuse began and testified that it happened very regularly. The abuse ended when the victim was in their early teens and told trusted adults about it.
In November, a jury found Kelty guilty of 2 counts of rape of a child in the first degree, one count of attempted rape of a child in the first degree, one count of child molestation in the first degree, four counts of rape of a child in the second degree, one count of child molestation in the second degree, one count of second-degree rape and one count of second-degree assault.
At the sentencing hearing, Judge Jacquelyn High-Edward sentenced Kelty to the high end of the sentencing guidelines for the most serious charges plus an additional 66 months as an exceptional sentence. The judge said the exceptional sentence was warranted because of the length and duration of the abuse.
