SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is asking for donations to help cover funeral expenses and support the families of two deputies shot during a deadly ambush near Spangle on Tuesday.
One deputy has died, while the second remains in critical condition and is not expected to survive, according to the sheriff’s office.
The deputies were shot while responding to a domestic violence shooting at a home on South Smythe Road. Investigators identified the shooter as 37-year-old Ryan T. Larsen, who killed his mother and one of his sisters and wounded another sister before opening fire on deputies.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner identified the two women killed as Rebecca Larsen, 45, and Suzanne Larsen, 72. The medical examiner determined Ryan Larsen died by suicide.
According to the sheriff’s office, both deputies also served in the U.S. Army National Guard.
The Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort, or SCOPE, has established a memorial fund to help cover funeral expenses and provide financial support to the deputies’ families.
The sheriff’s office said any donations remaining once funeral expenses are covered will go directly to the families.
