NACHES, Wash. — US Highway 12 suffered a complete washout overnight at milepost 191, forcing all traffic onto a Bonlow Drive detour through a Naches school zone for the foreseeable future, according to the Naches Fire Department.
The fire department is urging extreme caution as increased traffic flows through the school zone area. “Please, please drive safely and carefully through the area,” the Naches Fire Department said in their morning update.
The town of Naches closed the Greenway Pathway in the affected area and preemptively shut off power to pathway lighting as a precautionary measure to protect infrastructure.
Adding to potential confusion, Google Maps incorrectly shows the South Naches Road bridge as closed. Yakima County Public Works representatives confirmed Wednesday morning that the bridge remains open, though its status could change with little notice.
The washout represents a significant disruption to regional transportation, as US Highway 12 serves as a major east-west corridor through south-central Washington.
Transportation officials have not provided an estimated timeline for repairs.
Drivers should expect delays and exercise extra caution, particularly when traveling through the school zone portion of Bonlow Drive.
Officials will provide updates as conditions change.
