PULLMAN, Wash. — In the heart of Washington State University’s Greek Row, an unexpected neighbor has taken residence: a family homeless shelter.
This spring, Family Promise, a nonprofit that helps families experiencing homelessness, moved into the former Theta Chi fraternity house after losing their longtime home in April.
“We became homeless,” said Bruce Pitman, board president of Family Promise of the Palouse.
The organization saw potential in the vacant fraternity house to create a temporary home for families in need.
“When I saw it, it looked like something we could turn into a home for our families,” said Brenna Frantti, shelter family advocate for Family Promise.
The 10,000-square-foot house represents a significant upgrade from their previous location. Since relocating, Family Promise has doubled its capacity, now serving eight families compared to four previously.
The additional space enabled the organization to launch Interim Housing, a new program that allows families to stay on-site at the shelter for greater stability while working toward permanent housing.
“They can transfer to staying on-site here. It gives them more stability…being with their family, cooking their own food…before they get into sustainable housing,” Frantti said.
The Theta Chi house became vacant after the fraternity lost WSU recognition following allegations that a hazing incident led to a student’s suicide. WSU reports increased student interest in volunteering at the shelter.

“The community support through the move has been amazing,” Frantti said.
Pitman noted the positive relationship with the university community despite the unconventional arrangement.
“I think that we’re a novelty to them, and at the same time, it’s been a good relationship,” Pitman said.
Family Promise does not plan to remain in the former fraternity house permanently, but for now, the location has proven ideal for their expanding operations.
