MOSES LAKE, Wash. — Students in the Moses Lake School District will remain out of class until at least Monday after negotiations between the district and teachers’ union failed once again.
The Moses Lake Education Association held a rally outside Frontier Middle School, where hundreds of teachers and staff gathered during the ongoing strike.
Teachers are demanding fair compensation and opposing proposed benefit takebacks.
“We want to be back in the classroom, we miss our kids. We want a fair contract and we don’t want any takebacks. We’re done,” said Liz Pray, a school nurse with Moses Lake School District.
“We would rather be in the classrooms, doing what we’re supposed to be doing. Right now, we’re just asking for the district to think about the kids,” said fourth-grade teacher Prelita Owen.
The school district filed an injunction this week, claiming the strike is illegal. The injunction hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
“I have no concern. We’re standing together as an association. We’re ready,” Pray said.
The district continues providing breakfast and lunch pickup at elementary schools. Athletic practices and games will continue as long as coaches participate.
The Tuesday court hearing could determine whether teachers return to classrooms under court order or if negotiations continue.
