SPOKANE, Wash – A man scheduled to go on trial on weapons charges in January has just been arrested for murder.
Spokane Police arrested Randy Rojelio Chaparro for second degree murder.
In the affidavit of facts filed in Spokane County Superior Court, investigators say Chaparro shot a man early Monday morning at the Kensington Court Apartments near Division and Pacific.
Robert Denunzio was taken to the hospital and died from his injuries.
A witness told police she had been with Chaparro, who goes by the name Chaos, the day before.
She said they were visiting people at the Ridpath Apartments and that Chaparro told her he was going to kill someone that day.
They went to the Kensington Apartments later that night and she said she went to hug Denunzio when Chaparro pulled out a turquoise gun and shot him in the face.
Investigators obtained surveillance video from the Ridpath, which helped identify Chaparro as the suspect.
Police showed a photo lineup to the witnesses in the apartment and both of them identified Chaparro as the shooter.
When police went to the Ridpath, the manager told them in which apartment they could find Chaparro.
Police took him to the detectives’ building where they say they read him his rights and he agreed to answer questions.
Police say Chaparro denied knowing the victim and witnesses and denied being involved in the shooting.
Investigators took clothes and a DNA sample and booked Chaparro into jail on second degree murder charges.
They did not find a gun and did not identify a possible motive.
Already Facing Charges
Court records show Chaparro is already facing trial on weapons charges.
Police arrested him in September when the car he was riding in was pulled over.
At the time, police say Chaparro was attempting to hide something. They found a gun in a locked box in the car, which the driver of the car said belonged to Chaparro.
He’s charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.
He’s been locked up ever since, but court records show he posted a $4,000 bond on November 21st.
His trial on that charge is set for January 5th.
In court Tuesday, the judge set Chaparro’s bond at $5 million for the murder. He also raised the bond on the weapons charge to $50,000.
Court records show Chaparro has a criminal history that includes attempted residential burglary, drug possession, assault and robbery.
He’s under supervision for criminal charges in Lynwood and has charges pending for DUI, reckless endangerment and displaying a weapon in Snohomish County.
“My son was an innocent child, and he didn’t deserve to be murdered the way he was by this person, and for no absolute reason. And I think that he should pay the consequences for all of his actions. He is a violent person and he is a threat to the society, to the family, and he should not be bailed out or any kind of release.,” the victim’s mother said in the court appearance Tuesday.
