SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Christmas shoppers looking for unique gifts have a new destination this holiday season, as the Scale House Market hosted its winter market event over the weekend.
The Scale House Market, known as Spokane’s first year-round farmers market, transformed into what organizers called a “winter oasis” for the special holiday weekend. The event featured approximately 150 vendors, including the market’s regular indoor vendors and additional outdoor vendors set up in the courtyard.
The market opened its doors six months ago, bringing Spokane County its first year-round farmers market.
“It’s been really incredible since the end of the standard outdoor market season at the end of October. We’ve actually seen a rise in our sales and our vendor revenue,” said Brittany Tyler, director of the Scale House Market.
Tyler explained that the market’s name reflects its mission to help local businesses “scale up.”
Madison Gressler, who has been a vendor at the market since May, has experienced this benefit as she has seen her business grow over recent months.
“It’s been a huge success because I don’t have to be here. I don’t have to have a presence of me physically, but my products can still be here for people to come shop, and that has been tremendous,” Gressler said.
Visitor Pam Dean attended the winter market to support local businesses.
“It is so much fun seeing the community come together like this,” Dean said. “It is fabulous… I don’t think Spokane Valley has had anything like this before.”
Kelly Knerr, who owns a greeting card business, was among the vendors participating in the winter market.
“Everybody’s smiling, everybody’s laughing, everybody’s freezing, but everybody is having a really good time,” Knerr said.
Knerr said Spokane County has needed something like the Scale House Market for a long time.
“They promote community and the availability of resources and the opportunity for small businesses like me to put their name out for community,” she said.
The winter market event fell on Small Business Saturday, a day to explore local shops. However, market organizers stress that supporting small businesses should become a year-round habit.
“Make it something that’s really a part of your routine, and really reach out and make it a point to intentionally support our small businesses,” Tyler said.
The winter Market in the Quarry will be open again Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
