SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Investigators have arrested a 13-year-old boy for an arson at JCPenney at the Spokane Valley Mall last month.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, the fire broke out at the story May 17.
Detectives say the suspect and two others were at the JCPenney around 7:45 p.m. when the suspect used a lighter to burn holes in merchandise boxes before the fire spread to other boxes.
The store’s sprinklers and fire suppression systems activated to extinguish the fire but cause further damage as well.
SCSO estimates about $50,000 in damage.
Due to tips and information from the public, detectives were able to identify the suspect and arrested him. On Wednesday, he was booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center.
