POST FALLS, Idaho — Drivers face another wave of traffic delays in North Idaho as the major I-90 expansion project continues. On Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, both directions of I-90 between Huetter Road and Greensferry Road in Post Falls will be reduced to a single lane.
The overnight closure will last from 8 pm Tuesday night to 5 am Thursday morning. During the overnight lane closure, crews will shift traffic by moving cones and barriers to the south side of the freeway. This marks the second consecutive night of single-lane restrictions on this stretch of highway.
The Projects end goal will result in and expansion of the freeway to four lanes on each side between Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene. After tomorrow’s closure ends, the freeway will operate with two lanes in each direction while crews reconstruct the lanes on the north side of I-90.
Some drivers say the traffic shifts are overwhelming.
“I literally cannot leave my house any direction without going through construction at some point,” said Justin Hoffman, a Post Falls resident.
Hoffman also says he doesn’t agree with the projects timing.
“It’s important. We need the freeway widened. The traffic is horrible. It’s been horrible for a long time. I think the thing that frustrates me about it the most is that this should have been done decades ago,” Hoffman added.
ITD says by Thursday morning, they expect to have two lanes in each direction on the south side of the freeway, and the new configuration is what drivers will have to use for about a year.
