SPOKANE, Wash. — As Game 5 between the Spokane Chiefs and the Medicine Hat Tigers approaches, fans are filling local establishments across Spokane to cheer on their team.
The Hub Tavern, a neighborhood bar with deep hockey roots, has become a popular gathering spot. Owner Dave Richardson has decorated his establishment with Chiefs memorabilia, photos on the walls, and hockey sticks hanging from the ceiling.
“We’re a sport bar hockey, and we tolerate the other sports,” Richardson said.
Richardson reports that business has increased during the Chiefs’ playoff run.
“It’s been phenomenal. Spokane Chiefs have an amazing fan base. They’ve earned every bit of it. And we’re just excited to be part of it and to help celebrate their run towards the Memorial Cup,” he said.
Downtown at Lord Stanley’s, another sports bar, the energy is just as high. The owner telling 4 News Now its packed during Chiefs games.
Fans say the team has brought the community together. Ben Ferguson, a fan at The Hub Tavern, expressed optimism about the team’s chances.
“It’s awesome to see the boys going as far as they have. I believe we can pull this game off tonight, and it will be great,” Ferguson said.
Longtime fan Levi Knight hopes for a return to past glory.
“We’re hoping for a win, hoping for three in a row obviously,” Knight said. “Back in the day when they broke the Memorial Cup. It was a pretty exciting event. So to have a chance to do that again is pretty meaningful.”
The Chiefs need a win tonight to force Game 6 and keep their playoff hopes alive.
