SPOKANE, Wash. — A woman went before a Spokane County judge and her family on Thursday to face charges after her toddler overdosed on fentanyl in their home.
According to court documents, the child overdosed on February 21.
The three-year-old found it on his mother’s nightstand and thought it was candy. His mother, Jessica Demaine, told him to have some and eat it in his room.
According to court documents, the boy immediately felt hot, thirsty and fell unconscious. Rather than calling 911 right away, court documents show Demaine instead gave him a cold bath.
“I was in constant fear of him finding either her overdosed or himself overdosing,” the child’s foster mother said during Wednesday’s hearing. “My fear came true.”
First responders gave the boy Narcan and were able to save his life.
On Wednesday night, police issued a search warrant at Demaine’s house. They found meth, heroin and fentanyl in her purse.
“Ms. Demaine has repeatedly hurt this child since the point of his conception. He was born addicted to meth as a result of her drug use,” the foster mother said. “I am requesting a protection order for the child and myself since I fear retaliation from Ms. Demaine.”
The foster mother also asked the judge to keep Demaine in jail without bond. The judge agreed to the protection order, but set Demaine’s bond at $100,000.
Demaine has eight previous criminal convictions and 16 failure to appears in court.
Demaine is charged with third-degree assault, second-degree criminal mistreatment and reckless endangerment.
