SPOKANE, Wash. — Washington State University’s newest apple hybrid has a name, but you’ll have to be patient before you try it!
WSU announced ‘WA 64’, a hybrid of Honeycrisp and Cripps Pink apples, has been renamed as ‘Sunflare’.
In April, the school announced a naming competition would be held for the apple that’s been in the making for more than 20 years.
WSU received thousands of name submissions. ‘Sunflare’ was submitted by 49-year-old Ryan Escarcega of Centralia.
“This name hits all those marks,” said Jeremy Tamsen, director of the WSU Office of Commercialization. “These pinks, oranges, and yellows stand out against all the red apples on the shelf.”
WSU says ‘Sunflare’ is expected to hit grocery stores in 2029.
