BONNERS FERRY, Idaho – A woman from Bonners Ferry was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for her role in the overdose death of an inmate.
Twyla Basil pleaded guilty to distribution of a controlled substance.
According to federal court records, Basil was in the Boundary County jail in October 2022. Prosecutors say Basil, who had been arrested for driving while under the influence of fentanyl, smuggled the drug into the jail.
She gave a fellow inmate fentanyl, and the inmate died in her cell.
In addition to the prison sentence, Basil will have to pay restitution to the victim’s family. She will also be required to serve an additional three years of supervised release.
The victim is identified in court documents only as D.O.
A news release issued at the time of the incident identified a woman who died in the jail as Denise Overton of Spokane. Overton was 52 years old.
