KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office is warning people of a new scam circulating across the county.
According to KCSO, scammers have been sending fake letters to people claiming to be collection agencies for Kootenai County. These letters demand immediate payment for overdue property taxes and say if payment is not made, your bank accounts and property will be seized.
The letter includes a number it asks people to call. KCSO said this number is not linked to any agency federally or in Kootenai County and says not to call it.
If you receive a suspicious letter and believe you owe property taxes, contact the Kootenai County Treasurer’s Office directly at 208-446-1005.
You can also check the status of your property taxes using the Property Tax Look-Up Tool here.
KCSO said in order to avoid scams, always verify any suspicious communication, never provide personal or financial information to unverified sources and when in doubt, do research to confirm that people contacting you are legitimate.
