SPOKANE, Wash. — After the iconic 78-year-old willow tree at Finch Arboretum fell earlier this year, the City of Spokane Parks & Recreation conducted a survey to gather public input on its future.
Over 1,000 people responded, with 65% expressing support for a nature-based playground using willow wood components and planting replacement trees grown from cuttings of the original tree.
Students from Spokane Community College’s Greenhouse/Nursery program are already cultivating 100 trees from these cuttings, contributing to the tree’s legacy.
In the coming months, the community will be able to view proposed designs for the playground, though construction timelines will depend on funding availability.
Those wishing to contribute can make donations through a dedicated link.
In addition, the public is invited to share photos and memories of the willow tree to be included in a photo mosaic, which will be displayed at the arboretum.
