SPOKANE, Wash. — If you’re looking for a way to support your local veterans this Veterans Day weekend, Spokane has an event for you.
Meals on Wheels Spokane is partnering with Fairmount Memorial Association to host its 12th annual Race to Feed our Veterans on Sunday, Nov. 10.
The 5k run begins at 10 a.m. Sunday at Riverside Memorial Park. You can register online or in person before the event begins.
The cost of registration is $25. All the proceeds will go toward meals for veterans in the community.
“I think the veterans worked really hard and battled for our freedom,” said Owen Esperas, the executive director of Meals on Wheels. “Hopefully we can ensure that when they come home, they don’t have to fight for hunger.”
Meals on Wheels is a local non-profit that provides free meals to local seniors every day, with around 200 of those seniors being veterans.
Steve Smith is a Vietnam veteran who did 15 months in the combat zone. He eats at the Meals on Wheels senior center often and says they do a lot more for him than just provide delicious meals.
“There’s a lot of people to forward to visit every day. They take us to the ballpark. During the summer, they have movies for us, popcorn parties. We have dances. What more would you want?” Smith said.
