PULLMAN, Wash. — The City of Pullman has signed a contract with a construction firm to get started on moving the Pine Street pedestrian back to where it’s supposed to be. It’s been sitting on one side of the South Fork Palouse River since March, after the town experienced extremely high-water levels and flooding.
The bridge is designed to move out of the way when the rivers water levels get dangerously high. It’s required to do that, in order to meet the state’s “no rise” requirement, which prevents cities from installing structures on top of a river that would raise its water level.
Public Works Director Frank Mulcahy said the city has moved forward with the work. “We’re under contract now with the firm that will come in. They’ve got the notice to proceed. So starting today, they’re moving forward,” Mulcahy said.
Returning the bridge to its location will cost $150,000. The City of Pullman will pay for the project from the City of Pullman Streets Fund.
Crews are expected to finish moving it back to where it’s supposed to be, by the end of this year.
