SPOKANE – Starting Tuesday, people within the Spokane city limits are asked to stop using Crime Check to report nonemergency issues to police or fire. Instead, they should dial 311, a single point of contact for city services.
The change is the first step in the city’s effort to take over emergency communications services previously handled by Spokane Regional Emergency Communications, known as SREC. SREC voted to remove the City of Spokane from its dispatch system, the transition from Crime Check to 311 is the first phase of the city taking over those responsibilities.
People on the county side of Havana Street will continue to use the existing Crime Check number.
City officials say the change will make it easier for people to know where to turn for help. They also hope it will let police improve their processes more quickly.
The city already handles police calls and plans to take over fire-related calls at the beginning of next year. The city has hired 14 nonemergency call takers and plans to hire 14 more dispatchers for the new system.
You should still call 911 to report a crime in progress or an emergency.
