SPOKANE, Wash. — In an aim to honor the life of the son they lost to suicide, Brian and Brandy Singer started the “Escape the Darkness” event to raise awareness for suicide prevention through escape rooms.
Escape rooms were one of Logan Singer’s favorite activities. After he died by suicide in 2021, his family thought: what better way to honor his memory than with one of his favorite activities?
The Escape the Darkness event was created five years ago in partnership with Think Tank Escape Rooms.
“We have this tagline that says ‘no one should escape the darkness alone,'” Brandy Singer said. “We came up with Escape the Darkness to mean, not just with the escape room, but escaping the darkness of mental health and bringing it into the light.”
Having discussions surrounding mental health issues can be tough to do. According to the American Psychological Association, over half of young adults aged 18-34 have withheld mental health information from friends or medical providers.
The Singers hope the fun backdrop of an escape room will help people feel more comfortable having uncomfortable conversations.
“The topic can be heavy, but we don’t want it to be so heavy that we don’t talk about it. This is a way to celebrate Logan, it’s a way to celebrate mental health in our community, especially with our youth and just bring awareness and have a good time doing that,” Brandy said.
The event will take place on November 21 and 22, with some of the proceeds from games played on that day going to Fail Safe for Life, a Spokane-based organization aimed at breaking down the stigma of talking about mental health and suicide prevention.
