COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Voters in the Coeur d’Alene School District will decide in November whether to approve a maintenance and operations levy that would fund the district for the next two school years.
School board members are seeking an additional $5.25 million, saying higher costs for utilities, diesel and other day-to-day expenses are putting pressure on the district budget. District leaders say levy funding accounts for about 25% of the district’s overall budget.
The additional funding would also support extracurricular activities and teacher wages, according to the district.
“This levy cycle, we did have to put an increase mostly due to inflation costs,” Board Chair Lesli Bjerke said. “Our goal is really just to maintain what we have in terms of programs and staffing, but as you know everything has just increased so much, so that’s why we increased the amount.”
For a homeowner whose house is valued at $525,000, the district estimates the proposed levy increase would add about $76 a year — a little more than $6 a month.
The district will hold an informational public forum Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Lake City High School for people who want to learn more about the levy and what it could fund
