SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Valleyfest continued Saturday at Mirabeau Park, bringing families and community members together for a day of music, food, games, student activities and cultural programming.
The free festival, which began Friday night with a parade, featured activities spread throughout the park Saturday. Visitors could take part in chess tournaments, fish in a man-made pond, play pickleball and explore science, technology, engineering and math displays created for students.
Organizers also set aside space to highlight the variety of cultures represented in the Spokane Valley community.
Peggy Doering, Valleyfest’s executive director, said the event offers people a chance to enjoy the park and spend time together.
“It’s a great day to be outside. You’ve got the sunshine, amazing food,” Doering said. “It’s so much fun to smell all the food and everything that’s going on and sit out there and listen to music.”
Vendor George Fischer, who was raising money for children, said the setting and variety of activities give attendees options for all ages.
“It’s a beautiful green meadow with music and entertainment all around, with places for the kids to play and places for the adults to do what they want to do,” Fischer said.
A country line-dancing competition on Saturday evening, followed by a movie night on the park’s north lawn.
Saturday was also Astronomy Day at Valleyfest, giving children the opportunity to use high-tech telescopes.
Festival events continue Sunday with a bicycle celebration.
An area called Pawfest will also be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for attendees and their four-legged friends.
