SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — Spokane County health officials are urging people to get vaccinated against the flu, as the county reports the first flu death of the season.
The Spokane Regional Health District says the person who died was in their 80s and had underlying medical conditions. So far this season, 13 people have been hospitalized for flu complications in Spokane County.
“While influenza is often underestimated, this loss highlights the serious risks the virus can pose,” said Dr. Francisco Velázquez, Spokane County Health Officer.
The health district emphasize that while anyone can contract the flu, certain populations face significantly higher risks for severe illness or complications. That includes adults 65 and older, young children, pregnant individuals, and people with chronic health conditions.
During the 2025-26 flu season, the Washington State Department of Health reported 120 flu-related deaths. Of those, 28 were in Spokane County.
SRHD says the flu vaccine remains the most effective tool for preventing infection and reducing the severity of illness.
