SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Parks and Recreation says Madison Elementary is next in line to be replaced through the Together Spokane initiative. Since the school sits within Franklin Park, the park will be getting revamped as well.
Madison Elementary is currently the oldest north side school in the Spokane Public Schools district. This new project would turn the school into a two-story building and convert the land at Franklin Park into a public rec center.
“I think it’s a great way to utilize all the land that’s here,” said Melissa Angell, who was visiting the park with her family.
Now, architects are meeting every week to discuss design plans.
“We really feel like this project within Franklin Park really defines what Together Spokane is, maximizing on space that we have available,” said Spokane Parks Department director Garrett Jones.
The parks department says although the project’s master plan is not officially decided yet, it is looking at including indoor sports courts.
“What we heard from the community is that we need more indoor court space,” Jones said. “Whether this is a four court facility, a five court facility that’s attached to the school or adjacent to the school.”
The major upgrades are part of the Together Spokane initiative that voters passed last November.
Right now, the park has signs asking people to fill out a survey on what they would like to see added. You can take the survey yourself by clicking here.
Spokane Parks says it plans to start construction on the park around fall of 2028.
Spokane Public Schools says they are working with the city on gathering input first before creating a timeline for when kids will move out of Madison Elementary for demolition.
