SPOKANE, Wash –An overnight fire forced dozens of residents to evacuate a downtown Spokane apartment building.
It happened around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Grand Coulee Apartments at the intersection of West 1st Avenue and South Cedar Street.
According to the Spokane Fire Department, the call first came in as gunshots at the apartment building.
When emergency crews arrived, they saw two people signaling from a fourth-floor window, alerting them to a fire in the apartment.
They then discovered the “pops” that sounded like gunshots were actually fireworks.
One man was taken into custody.
Fire crews used a ladder truck to reach the fire on the fourth floor and put it out.
The building was evacuated, and Spokane Fire says 12 people are displaced.
