SPOKANE, Wash. — After being closed for more than three months due to the Upriver Fire, Camp Sekani is once again accepting visitors.
“I’m just excited to see what they’ve fixed,” hiker Jeff Heatwole said. “See how the trails look, see what features they put back on the bike trails.”
The Washington Department of Natural Resources team led the restoration process, along with Spokane Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry team. Local nonprofit Evergreen East Mountain Bike Alliance also helped clean up.
“I’m glad they did have that recovery process so we can have some good trails to ride again,” biker Jason Holm said.
While trails are now accessible, the parking lot at Camp Sekani is still closed due to construction for phase II of the Make Beacon Hill Public Project. Once complete, the trailhead will have more parking, restrooms, added lighting and fencing, and trailhead cameras.
In the meantime, people can park at other lots like John Shields Park or the east gravel lot at Minnehaha Park. The disc golf course has also reopened with the exception of hole #1, because it is in the construction area.
Spokane’s Parks and Recreation department says hikers should expect the landscape to look different, and they urge people to stay on the restored trails.
Although there is good progress, agencies say they will continue to look into potential erosion and ask people to use the area with caution.
