Tears for Fears co-founder Curt Smith is joining an investment group working to acquire Bath City FC, the soccer club based in his hometown of Bath, England.
The group behind the proposed takeover announced plans involving roughly 50 investors and a deal valued at about £6.3 million. Smith is expected to participate as both an investor and an ambassador for the club, bringing another recognizable name to the project.
For Smith, the connection is personal. He grew up in Bath before finding international success with Tears for Fears, whose hits include Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Shout.
The investors plan to strengthen Bath City’s finances and infrastructure while supporting the club’s long-term development. The group also hopes to increase interest in soccer within the city, which has traditionally had a strong association with rugby.
Bath City currently competes outside the top divisions of English soccer. The proposed ownership group sees community involvement as an important part of its plans while working toward greater stability and future progress on the field.
