CHENEY, Wash. — The Cheney Rodeo is back tonight, bringing nearly six decades of Western tradition and summer excitement to the region. The 58th annual event kicks off tonight at the Bi-Mart Arena.
The rodeo features classic events that have drawn crowds year after year: bull riding, bareback riding, barrel racing, and more. For many people in the community, attending the rodeo has become a beloved summer tradition.
“The atmosphere is wild, the atmosphere is just crazy,” said Al Parsons, who has announced the Cheney Rodeo for the last 17 years. “When we talk about the ones in the grandstands having a good time, we are not kidding.”
The rodeo’s appeal extends beyond the competition itself. Hayven Chase, Miss Columbia River Circuit, captured the unique draw of the event: “There is just nothing like the energy that comes from a rodeo. I can’t even describe the feeling.”
This year’s rodeo runs through Sunday with special themed nights. Tonight is Tough Enough To Wear Pink Day in support of cancer awareness. Tomorrow night features Patriot Night. Sunday is Family Day, when the rodeo reduces ticket prices for children to $5 for those who are 12 and under.
Gates open at 5 p.m. today and tomorrow, with rodeo action starting at 7 p.m. Sunday’s gates open at 2 p.m. with the rodeo beginning at 4 p.m.
