SPOKANE, Wash. — The Republicans of Spokane County held a judicial forum to help voters learn about the candidates running for county district and state Supreme Court seats. Nine candidates participated in the event, which gave attendees the opportunity to meet them face-to-face.
“This is a judicial forum,” said Shelly Clark, Republicans of Spokane County Chairman. “Most people have no idea about the judges. Probably the most commonly asked question is who are the judges? What do you know about them? What are their stances on certain things?”
After the forum, candidates made themselves available for one-on-one conversations with attendees — something organizers said is uncommon in Eastern Washington.
Alene Lindstrand, an attendee, emphasized the importance of voter education. “I think it’s important because I don’t want to ever say ‘take my word for it,'” she said. “I’d rather people take my information if I am helping a candidate and do their own research.”
The organization saw stronger attendance than a similar event held two years ago. Diana Wilhite, Republicans of Spokane County Vice Chair, noted that primary elections typically see low voter participation. “In primaries, if you get more than 35 percent, it’s considered great because the turnout for primary voting is very minimal,” she said.
The primary election is scheduled for August 4.
