SPOKANE, Wash. — The Inland Northwest Land Conservancy (INLC) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on June 23 and June 25 is calling for volunteers to help pull down an old chain-link fence and clear the way for wetland restoration at Waikiki Springs Nature Preserve.
They will remove posts, cut and roll the fencing, and set some aside to reuse for a temporary trail closure. This is hands-on work that opens the path for machines to create new wetland areas safely.
What to expect:
This project will be taking place off-trail, over uneven terrain, and over a mile from the trailhead. Volunteers should be able to lift and carry at least 30 lbs.
What will be provided:
Power and hand tools to support removal, vehicles and trailers to haul fencing away, gloves and hard hats, extra drinking water.
What to bring:
Sturdy boots or shoes, weather appropriate layers, a lunch, plenty of drinking water.
Good to know:
No established restroom on site. Plan accordingly.Dress for the weather and expect a bit of dirt—this is a hands-on project.
