SPOKANE, Wash. — Investigators discovered what appeared to be human remains inside a home destroyed by the Upriver Fire on Wednesday afternoon.
Spokane County Sheriff’s Office detectives, Fire District 9 fire investigators, and Forensic Unit personnel located the possible remains at approximately 1:55 p.m. on June 17 after a family member reported that a resident had refused to leave despite a Level 3 Evacuation Alert and could not be reached.
On June 16, deputies and Spokane Police officers entered the unlocked home at approximately 2:30 p.m. to urge evacuation but received no response. They were ordered to withdraw as the fast-moving fire advanced on the area.
Detectives and fire investigators will work with the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office to confirm the identity of the possible decedent and the cause and manner of death. The investigation remains active.
