MOSES LAKE, Wash. – A Christmas Day car crash on Highway 12 claimed the lives of three family members, including a 6-month-old infant, when a driver crossed into their lane and struck their vehicle head-on.
Nashiely Bustamante, her partner Gustavo Guzman-Gomez, and their son Giovanni were traveling from Moses Lake to Walla Walla when the collision occurred around 22 miles west of Walla Walla on Highway 12.
The Washington State Patrol reported that a 22-year-old driver was traveling in the opposite direction when he went off the road, hit a guard rail and then over-corrected and drove into the eastbound lanes. That’s when he hit Bustamante and Guzman-Gomez head-on.
Neither Bustamante nor Guzman-Gomez were wearing seat belts when the crash happened. Both died at the scene. Their six-month-old Giovanni was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
Antonio Bustamante, Nashiely’s father, is dealing with losing his only daughter and only grandson.
“Christmas Day, my daughter, my grandson, all of them at once is terrible,” Antonio Bustamante said.
The family is still reeling from what happened, but Antonio Bustamante says he has been amazed at the support they have received since the crash.
“A lot of people have been showing up. But this time, these moments, if they give you a hug, you have no clue [what that means],” Antonio Bustamante said.
The family estimates funeral costs will reach approximately $30,000. They have established a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $15,000 to help cover expenses. The fundraiser has collected nearly $5,000 in donations.
Antonio Bustamante says he is grateful for how generous people have been so far.
“There’s a lot of people reaching out for us. Some people do a little, and some people do a lot. But we thank you for every single dollar we get,” Antonio Bustamante said.
