SPOKANE, Wash – The National Weather Service is warning that a wind storm expected for the Inland Northwest this week could be similar to a storm in January 2021 that killed two people and caused extensive damage.
In a briefing Wednesday morning, NWS said wind gusts this week could be similar to those on January 13, 2021.
Even higher gusts could hit parts of the Spokane/Pullman area.
The storm in 2021 led to many downed trees, extensive power outages and trees and branches blocking roads.
In 2021, there were peak wind gusts of 71 miles per hour and winds more than 60 miles an hour for 2-3 hours.
A man was killed by a fallen tree on Spokane’s south hill. Another man was killed by a tree on the east side of Lake Coeur d’Alene.
So many trees came down in Comstock Park, it was closed for several months.
The National Weather Service has put in place a high wind watch for Tuesday night into Wednesday.
NWS says we can expect winds between 25-45 mph with gusts from 50-70 mph.
