SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Many community members in Spokane Valley are criticizing Councilmember Jessica Yaeger for a recent Facebook post.
On Thursday, Councilmember Yaeger allegedly shared a Facebook post on her personal account, replying “yes” to a statement that starts with “I am a proud Islamophobe.”
Karen Stromgren, a Spokane Valley resident on her way to pray at the Spokane Islamic Center, addressed the Islamophobic Facebook post made by her elected councilmember.
“It’s an assault on a community,” Stromgren said. “I was absolutely appalled.”
Stromgren has lived in Spokane Valley as a Muslim for 27 years. She takes pride in the diversity of her congregation.
“So many beautiful people from different countries, different ethnicities, cultures. I mean, it’s really beautiful,” Stromgren said.
She says this post spreads harmful rhetoric and is irresponsible coming from a city leader.
“Somebody that’s voted into this position should be educated about the community that they are serving,” Stromgren said.
She believes a formal apology is the next right step.
Councilman Al Merkel says he was very surprised by Yaeger’s posts, and it will be brought up at the next meeting.
“Surprised that, Spokane Valley city councilman would post something like that. And, frankly, the city, Spokane Valley city councilman would believe something like that,” Merkel said. “I have received, several comments from community members that are extremely concerned about this.”
Merkel says he intends to bring this up at the next city council meeting.
The mayor and deputy mayor put out a statement about the situation, writing:
“As leaders of the City of Spokane Valley, we believe in freedom of speech and support the rights of all law-abiding citizens. Councilmember Yaeger’s views are that of her own and do not represent the full Council or City of Spokane Valley. As we proudly represent the residents of Spokane Valley, we stand firmly united against all forms of discrimination. The City is committed to fostering a community of respect for all citizens, regardless of faith.”
KXLY has reached out to Councilmember Yaeger for a comment but did not hear back by the time of Friday’s newscast.
The next Spokane Valley City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 25 at 6 p.m.
