SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane installed new automated red light traffic safety cameras at the intersection of E Mission Avenue and N Greene Street. A violation warning period begins Monday, November 24th.
Mayor Lisa Brown’s office says this is part of her package of traffic safety improvements.
The Spokane Police Department selected this intersection due to increased traffic safety concerns. The city says Mission and Greene is among the busiest intersections in Spokane and has been the site of 18 crashes since 2023.
A 30-day grace period will begin Monday, where violators will receive warnings. After that, drivers crossing through the intersection after the light turns red will be charged with a $145 infraction.
“Over the past few years, Spokane has experienced an unacceptable increase in traffic collisions. Any injury or death on our road is one too many,” Director of Transportation and Sustainability Jon Snyder said in the city’s press release. “These cameras are a great tool to remind drivers to slow down and ultimately reduce crashes.”
“The intersection of Mission and Greene has one of the highest collision rates in the City. SPD has seen a reduction in collisions, red light running, and speeds at intersections where red light violation cameras have been placed previously. Safer driving means fewer collisions and safer streets for everyone,” said Spokane Police Lieutenant Benjamin Maplethorpe.
City staff say more traffic safety cameras will be installed near Shadle Park High School, Shaw Middle School, and at the intersection of N Division St and E Magnesium Rd.
