Phillips was in prison for murdering Kassie Dewey and trying to murder her 5-year-old child at their home in the Northtown neighborhood in April of 2021.
Court documents from the case say Phillips was Dewey’s ex-boyfriend. Two days before the murder, Dewey had kicked Phillips out of their home.
The Department of Corrections says Phillips’ death is still under investigation, but foul play is not suspected.
