Despite the text in his Venmo transactions, former WSU quarterback John Mateer says he did not bet on college football games.
Mateer, who now plays for Oklahoma, became the subject of an online controversy this week when someone posted screenshots of Venmo transactions that said money was exchanged for “sports gambling.”
Tuesday, Mateer posted to Twitter/X “My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends. I have never bet on sports.”
According to Sooner Sports reporter George Stoia III, Oklahoma released a statement saying in part, “OU Athletics is unaware of any NCAA investigation and has no reason to believe there is one pending.”
Mateer played three seasons at WSU from 2022 to 2024.
He transferred to Oklahoma in December 2024.
