BOISE, Idaho – President Trump says convicted University of Idaho killer Bryan Kohberger should have to tell what happened before the judge accepts his plea deal.
Kohberger pleaded guilty to killing Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen when the four were students at the University of Idaho.
He will be sentenced Wednesday, and prosecutors and the defense have agreed to recommend four consecutive life sentences instead of the death penalty, which Kohberger faced had the case gone to trial.
President Trump commented on the case on his Truth Social account Monday. He said, in part, “I hope the Judge makes Kohberger, at a minimum, explain why he did these horrible murders… the Judge should make him explain what happened.”
Judge Steven Hippler has already accepted Kohberger’s plea deal and could decide on a different sentence than what is recommended, but he cannot sentence Kohberger to death and he cannot compel him to confess anything specific about the crime.
