WICHITA, Kan. – The day has arrived, No. 8 seed Gonzaga takes on the No. 1 seed Houston Cougars in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament.
This is the first-ever meeting between these programs, the Zags the winningest program in the country since 2017-18, Coogs sit in second.
Houston is known for their slow pace and excellent defense, ranked No. 1 in the country in points allowed per game. The Coogs are eerily similar to GU’s rival Saint Mary’s Gaels with being a slow, efficient team that specializes in controlling tempo and locking down solid opponents.
Gonzaga countered this style of play with starting forwards Braden Huff and Graham Ike together in the WCC Tournament championship game to beat the Gaels. They both played extremely well, and this formula worked wonders again in a huge Round of 64 win over Georgia two days ago.
The Zags look to extend the nation’s longest Sweet 16 streak to 10 with a win, Houston second with five-straight trips looking for their sixth.
Tip-off between Gonzaga and Houston is today at 5:40 p.m. PST.
