Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies arrested five people on federal immigration charges Wednesday night.
According to the sheriff’s office, the deputies were patrolling near the Super 1 Foods in Athol.
The deputies spotted what they believed to be a suspicious vehicle in the store’s parking lot.
While conducting a records check on the license plate, deputies say several people got out of the car and went in the store.
According to the sheriff’s office, the car was registered to a man who had a federal arrest warrant for previously being deported.
As deputies approached the vehicle, the people who had gone into the store came outside then went back inside when they saw the deputies.
A deputy went into the store and detained them.
U.S. Border Patrol officials were contacted and responded to the scene.
After further investigation, Border Patrol agents detained five Mexican nationals and booked them into the Kootenai County Jail for federal immigration violations.
