SPOKANE, Wash. — A local restaurant stepped up to help a Spokane nonprofit ensure families in need have Thanksgiving meals this holiday season.
Kalico Kares is a nonprofit started by the owners of Kalico Kitchen, a breakfast and lunch spot on Monroe Street.
This year, the nonprofit is teaming up with another nonprofit organization, One Heart Spokane, and local schools to identify and provide for families who cannot afford holiday meals.
“It’s a hard time for our community. It’s a hard time for our world, and what better way to be the hope and the light than to bring it to other people,” said Heidi Banik, Executive Director of Kalico Kares.
The organization placed fliers around Kalico Kitchen advertising One Heart’s mission to feed families.
With all the donations from its customers, Kalico Kares was able to donate $2,500 to One Heart to help put food on families’ tables.
This helped the organization surpass last year’s 250 meals provided.
“This year, with support from Kalico Kitchen and other donors, we are able to go above 250 families and we’re actually at 290 families this year,” said Marcy Rother of One Heart Spokane.
Now, instead of stressing about how they are going to afford a holiday meal this year, all of those families can enjoy their Thanksgiving.
