COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The Coeur d’Alene City Council unanimously approved a new ordinance to restrict the sale of Kratom within city limits.
The substance is marketed as a supplement and often sold in gas stations, convenience stores and smoke shops. But doctors say it can have opioid-like effects.
The DEA classifies kratom as a drug and it can be sold in many different forms including tablets, capsules and powders.
During Tuesday night’s meeting, the city council approved an ordinance requiring stores to get a permit to sell the product. It also bans it from being sold to anyone under the age of 21 and sets guidelines for how strong the product can be.
In the last year, other cities, including Spokane and Spokane Valley, have outright banned the sale of kratom.
