SPOKANE, Wash, — A coalition of environmental advocacy groups brought together residents from across the Spokane area Wednesday night to discuss data center legislation and learn how to effectively voice their concerns to local officials.
The informal meeting aimed to unite community members around shared concerns about how data centers will impact the region’s water and energy resources.
“Local environmental advocacy groups that are a part of a coalition called the Spokane Environmental Policy Coalition have gotten together to show the public we are all on the same team,” Parrish said. “There is no leader in this. You are doing such a great job of advocating for what you want to see around this subject of data centers.”
The forum addressed a growing frustration among residents who feel they lack meaningful opportunities to participate in decisions affecting their community.
“I think that people have been feeling really frustrated by the lack of opportunities to say what matters to them and what they want to see,” Parrish said. “I think a lot of our futures are at stake in terms of water and energy usage around data centers, and so tonight we wanted to show that people are listening.”
A central focus of the evening was education. Organizers walked attendees through the process of effectively communicating their positions during city and county commission meetings, empowering residents to participate directly in the legislative process.
While the environmental organizations hosting the event are not involved in writing the actual legislation, they view forums like this as essential to improving how decisions get made.
“We the advocacy groups aren’t the decision makers, but we do want to foster more transparency in this process and build public trust,” Parrish said.
The coalition plans to organize additional events in the future, though no specific dates have been scheduled.
