SPOKANE, WASHINGTON — One of the largest murals ever to come to downtown Spokane is currently taking shape in an alley between Post and Lincoln Streets, about a block south of River Park Square.
The 5,300-square-foot piece celebrates the people, places, events and traditions that have shaped the Lilac City over the past century.
Artists Stacie Boyer and Jennifer Batey began work on the mural two weeks ago and have spent nearly every day since bringing their vision to life through freehand painting. Together, the mixed-media artist and muralist bring decades of experience in public art, illustration, and large-scale mural work to the project.
“It’s been great—we are out here every day,” Batey said. “People stop; there’s locals who stop and say thank you that we are making it beautiful. There are people who are visitors who are just stopping and discovering this, and they are walking through, and it’s just been nice—the interaction with community and people.”
The mural is part of an ongoing initiative by the Downtown Spokane Partnership to activate underutilized alley spaces through public art, lighting, enhanced maintenance and other placemaking improvements.
The public is invited to watch the artists work over the next two weeks, with completion expected on or near mid-September. The new mural will be celebrated during the First Friday Art Walk festivities on October 3 in partnership with Spokane Arts.
