SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A Mead school bus driver has been ticketed for causing the bus to crash while kids were on board Wednesday afternoon.
The crash happened while the bus was heading north on Highway 2 and turning left onto Colbert Road.
Three students were on the bus at the time, but none of them were hurt.
Wednesday, troopers said the bus stalled during the turn into oncoming traffic. A car was unable to avoid the bus and pushed it into a nearby dump truck.
WSP said all injuries were minor, the person driving the car had a broken finger.
WSP said the bus driver was issued an infraction. A statement from the agency said in part “once the inspection is completed, WSP will share results with Mead School District. It was very fortunate no one was seriously injured. WSP’s investigation has determined the school bus driver failed to yield right of way and was issue an infraction for the cause of the collision.”
The Mead School District also issued a statement on the safety and maintenance it does on all of its buses. The district said “our school buses undergo an annual inspection by the Washington State Patrol every summer and this year, for the third straight year, 100% of our bus and transportation fleet passed inspection. In addition, our bus drivers complete routine daily pre-trip and post-trip safety and maintenance checks and our mechanics perform monthly inspections, all to ensure the continued safety of our buses.”
The district said transportation staff and administrators will continue to check in with the students involved at school or over the phone.
