Spokane, Wash. — The Spokane fires burned portions of the area surrounding Riverside State Park and the Whitewater Disc Golf Course, but the damage has not significantly disrupted play at the popular recreational destination.
The 18-hole disc golf course remains open to players despite a small burn scar along the road. Only one hole — hole thirteen — is temporarily closed. That hole was not even badly damaged by the fires.
Gus Nollmeyer, a frequent player at the course, said the fire’s impact is barely noticeable to golfers. “I didn’t see anything today that is evidence of fire impact at all,” Nollmeyer said.
The course, which was featured in a previous Air 4 Adventure episode, continues to draw players who appreciate the sport’s combination of competition and outdoor recreation. While some golfers have noticed fewer people visiting the course since the fires, those who do come out remain committed to playing.
Justin Marshall, another frequent disc golfer, highlighted the appeal of the sport. “You get to hike in as well, compete with younger guys and you know, kind of show them what’s up,” Marshall said.
Disc golfers say the sport is accessible to newcomers interested in trying something new. The course’s continued operation means players can resume their regular competitions and enjoy the natural setting of the area near Riverside State Park.
Despite the fires’ impact on the surrounding landscape, the Whitewater Disc Golf Course has proven resilient, allowing the community to return to the recreational activities that make the area a valued destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
