SPOKANE, Wash. — More than 700 families lost their homes in recent Spokane-area fires, and many others reported severe property damage. Financial assistance is available, but some application deadlines are approaching.
The American Red Cross, Tzu Chi and the Washington Emergency Management Division are offering assistance. Each program has different eligibility requirements, application methods and award amounts.
Only about half of families whose homes were destroyed have applied for Red Cross assistance, according to the organization. The Red Cross application period ends Aug. 30.
To qualify, a home must have been significantly damaged or destroyed and deemed unlivable. Renters and homeowners may apply regardless of income.
“We have an idea based upon the disaster, and funds our generous donors have made possible, and so we are trying to reach everybody whose home had major damage or destroyed,” said James Jarvis, director of external relations for the American Red Cross. “We would love to provide you with financial assistance. It is a gift from our donors, and every bit of help I know helps as you are trying to pick up the pieces.”
Red Cross assistance is provided through electronic funds transfer or a preloaded debit card. Applicants must visit a Red Cross service center to apply.
Washington Emergency Management Division ranges from $750 to $2,250 depending on household size. Applicants can apply online or visit one of the service centers in the area at.
Tzu Chi volunteers will be in Spokane on August 22 and 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Shadle Park High School, 4327 N Ash St, Spokane, to assist families with registration and applications. You can also apply online through through this link.
