SPOKANE, Wash –A man who police say started a fire in North Spokane Thursday was taken into custody.
The fire was reported just after 10 a.m. near the intersection of W. Francis Avenue and North Whitehorse Street.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff, the fire started in a field and quickly spread towards homes northeast of the Dairy Queen.
Witnesses reported seeing Good Samaritans grab garden hoses to try and put out the fire before fire crews arrived.
The fire was brought under control and only did minor damage to a fence.
Security cameras from another nearby business showed a man pour something onto the ground and then walk away from the fire.
Less than one hour later, deputies took 35-year-old man Matthew Robinson into custody.
Robinson had a bottle of hand sanitizer and a lighter on his person when deputies arrested him.
Robinson was booked into the jail and charged with 1st-degree arson.
