SPOKANE, Wash. — The world of table tennis is on display in Spokane this weekend.
The Podium is hosting the WTT Youth Contender Spokane alongside the ITTF World Para Challenger, bringing athletes from around the world to the Lilac City.
Vlad Farcas, the tournament’s creator and organizer with USA Table Tennis, says Spokane has been a great fit for the events.
“We love Spokane. We love the city. We love the people here that we work with. We love the venue,” Farcas said.
The competition is providing opportunities for athletes at multiple levels, including elite para players chasing valuable ranking points and youth competitors looking to make their mark internationally.
Farcas says Spokane is one of only a handful of cities around the world hosting an elite para table tennis event.
“It’s really important points qualifying for world championships,” Farcas said. “You see many athletes, they will be in the Paralympic Games in L.A.”
And you don’t have to be an elite athlete to get involved.
Farcas encourages anyone interested in table tennis to find a local club or league and give the sport a try.
“Go see yourself. Try the challenge of table tennis,” Farcas said.
Sunday marks the final day of this weekend’s competitions at The Podium, but the international action returns Tuesday with the ITTF World Para Elite Spokane event.
